How do QR codes work?
The patterns in QR codes are binary codes that can be decoded to reveal the data contained within the code. The three wide squares outside the QR code can be used by a QR reader to define a regular QR code. When it recognizes these three shapes, it understands that everything within the square is a QR code.
The QR code is then analyzed by breaking it down into a grid by the QR reader. It examines each grid square and assigns a value to each one depending on whether it is black or white. The grid squares are then grouped together to form larger patterns.
The various types of QR codes
Although QR codes can be used for a variety of purposes, there are four commonly accepted variants. The “input mode” specifies how data can be processed and is determined by the version used. Numeric, alphanumeric, binary, or kanji may all be used. The version information field in the QR code communicates the mode type.
Numeric mode – This is the mode for decimal digits 0 through 9. With up to 7,089 characters available in numeric mode, it is the most efficient storage mode.
Alphanumeric mode – This mode accepts decimal digitals 0 through 9, as well as uppercase letters A through Z, as well as the symbols $, percent, *, +, –,., /, and :, as well as a space. It has a storage capacity of up to 4,296 characters.
Byte mode – Characters from the ISO–8859–1 character set are shown in byte mode. It has a capacity of 2,953 characters.

However, with only 1,817 characters available for storage, it has since become the least powerful. Extended Channel Interpretation (ECI) mode is a second kanji mode that allows you to determine the UTF–8 kanji character set. Some newer QR code readers, on the other hand, would be unable to read this character set.
There are two more modes, all of which are variations of the others:
Structured Append mode – encrypts data through multiple QR codes, allowing up to 16 to be read at the same time.
FNC1 mode – transforms a QR code into a GS1 barcode.
As long as each QR code includes the correct version information area, a QR code may use multiple modes.
