I’ve been asked recently how much a site manager should think about the Drupal SEO. And besides, isn’t that something for marketing companies? I think search engine optimization is something anyone who manages a Drupal website should recognize, but knowing where to start can be difficult for those new to the topic.
The good news is that simple search engine optimization (SEO) can be mastered by any site administrator. Here are 7 Drupal SEO tips for getting you on the right side of Google.
Delete your splash page
Yeah, maybe you can think of some brilliant excuse to have a splash page, but that’s going to damage your SEO almost definitely. Search engine crawlers are turning up at your site trying to figure out what it’s all about and the usual Flash or multimedia home page does not really give them anything to work with.
Splash pages have been slowly losing traction but are still out there, especially on musicians and other artists’ sites. Great or not, when it comes to SEO, Google wants your home page to have valuable details about your site and a big Flash file won’t cut it. The very bad thing is that not only can search engine crawlers not read any splash pages, but they also avoid indexing of the rest of the web.
Keywords for improving SEO

Wordtracker is one of those programmes, although several others exist. Also avoid keywords which are too general. Competition on a keyword as popular as say, ‘Drupal’ can be difficult.
One last point on using keywords. Of course it is important to write. If your writing sounds trendy or repetitive because you are trying to use so many keywords in the text, you are on the wrong track. It takes time to develop content that works for both individuals and search engines but the initiative pays off.
Build friendly URLs for SEO
By default Drupal will create URLs which look like: http:/www.example.com/? q = knot/77. As for the SEO, this is an issue. Fortunately, clean URLs and the wonderful PathAuto module provide support. Clean URLs is actually a setting in Drupal that can be allowed if the Apache mod rewrite module is activated on your webserver.
PathAutho is perhaps one of the most popular Drupal SEO modules 2020 and allows you to use the power of the Token module to form your URLs. I would suggest using it to ensure that descriptive, keyword-filled URLs are an integral part of any node you write.
Develop the inbound ties
Having inbound links to your website is a major factor in search rankings. But that is certainly a situation where quantity is trumped by consistency. I’ve seen people spend a lot of time exchanging links with sites of low quality which seem to be specialised in nothing else. Google is pretty good at recognising a link from a reputable site versus a connexion farm, and if you spend your time on the latter, it’s a waste of time.
Have quality content created
Google published an update to its search algorithm named Panda earlier this year. Many web managers have seen their websites vanish from the search lists overnight.
Matt Cutts, one of the developers who worked on the upgrade explained, “This update is intended to minimize rankings for low-quality sites — low-value add-on sites for consumers, copy content from other platforms or sites that are just not very valuable. At the same time, it will offer better rankings for high-quality sites — creative content sites and information such as analysis, in-depth rep.
With the earlier point regarding inbound connexions, the production of quality content also helps. Think about it, if people enjoy your content they can connect to it or share it via social media, and very few things get the attention of Google faster than loads of incoming links from reputable websites.
When developing content one last thing to bear in mind is its length. You don’t have to write a book, but it should be at least 300 lines.
Optimisation of the pictures
For usability purposes, it’s become common to have an ALT attribute on pictures, but it can also improve the Drupal website SEO. Putting keywords in the image attributes ALT and TITLE helps in the Drupal SEO maximization of their searchability. A less well-known tip about photos is to assign them file names filled in with keywords. Imagine you are selling a fantastic Drupal theme with a high-res screenshot of your handiwork on your website.
