Many college professors require students to write multiple essays throughout the course. Continue reading below for more information!

1. Persuasive/Argumentative Essay

A persuasive or argumentative essay is written to persuade the reader into taking a specific side on a topic. A thesis is extremely important in this type of writing style. The thesis will be in the introduction and is a statement that can be argued.

The writer will then argue the thesis using research-based information to hopefully persuade the reader to agree. Be sure to complete extensive research and have enough evidence to prove your argument.

2. Expository Essay

An expository essay is written to explain a topic. This topic can be about a definition that needs explaining, a cause and effect, a reflection, a critical analysis, or even a basic explanation listing steps on what to do. The most important thing to understand is the type of expository essay the writer is writing.

Once the writer has the topic, they’ll then conduct some research and use their own words to explain the topic. Persuasive and expository essays are types of synthesis essays. It’s also a good idea to understand how to write a synthesis essay outline.

Having a clear outline will speed up the writing process and help the writer organize their thoughts.

3. Descriptive Essay

A descriptive essay is written to describe a topic. This type of essay may be written to describe and analyze a piece of literary work that was read. This type of essay could also be written to describe an event or an object.

The writer will use a variety of adjectives and adverbs when writing this essay and similes and metaphors as well. The writer must find ways to describe the topic in order to connect with the reader and make it easy for the reader to understand it.

4. Narrative Essay

A narrative essay is written to tell a story. The writer can talk about past experiences and use creative language. The writer isn’t required to complete research on this topic as the topic will be about the writer themselves or a story of their own that they’re telling.

The writer must find ways, however, to keep the reader intrigued. A good hook in the introduction and creative and interesting language and descriptions used throughout the writing will help hold the reader’s attention.

5. Compare and Contrast Essay

A compare and contrast essay is one that takes two different topics, ideas, people, locations, events, or something else and then compares and contrasts them to one another. What do the two things have in common? How do they differ from one another?

The writer should be able to help the reader understand two different topics at one time by using the compare and contrast approach. Research will most likely need to be conducted when writing this type of essay.
